Question of the Week

Ok, here's my question of the week.

How do you use exercise?

I'm really torn.  In weight watchers you get "activity points" but they're kind of vague as to if you should use them or not.  I am a hard worker-outer.  I'm usually earning over 20 activity points/week.  I'm not just taking a small walk here.  I'm sweatin' to the oldies. :)

So, I don't think I should use ALL of those points, that doesn't seem smart.  BUT, I also feel like I never want my body to feel like it is starving, ESPECIALLY after a workout.

Absolutely Avocado (Cook West)My current plan is to make sure that I eat an egg after workout out and I've been trying to add a healthy fat to that meal, and using my activity points to compensate for that.  Currently that's been adding some avocado to the meal.  I mash it up and eat it on top of my egg.  I like it a lot.

But, would I lose better if I didn't do that?

Do you eat more after you exercise?  Tell me more.

I'm definitely hungrier on a day I workout as opposed to the days I don't. Especially the days I lift weights. It's a good sign that your body's metabolism is burning...yea! So, yes, eat, but eat the good stuff. Fuel your body with high quality carbs (whole grains... whole wheat breads, brown rice, quinoa etc.)and a bit of protein (the egg is a good choice, but maybe omit the yoke every once in a while? Or just use half the yoke. I usually just eat egg whites, or one whole egg with two other egg whites).

I think your healthy fat is fine. Can you eat it on half of a whole wheat english muffin? The carbs will help you recover and not feel so starving. Then have a salad for lunch, another 100 calorie snack in the afternoon and then a healthy dinner with some protein to help repair muscles and a good carb to get you through the night.

Way to go! You are one of the most consistent people I know! go you!

Eating after exercise is a must! Your body absorbs the nutrients it need to repair itself after a work out best if eaten within 2 hours after a hard workout. Protein is especially necessary.

Protein and healthy fats (found in avacados, nuts, fish) are essential! And eating protein after a workout is very important too. It feeds your muscles and keeps your metabolism and blood sugar up. So keep up the good work! I'm impressed by your dedication

When I do workout, I do yoga - which completely transformed me and my life. I had a really tough pregnancy and I still haven't figured out how to have a consistent schedule. My son is almost two. I've been working on doing away with guilt and focusing being motivated by the right reason: my love for myself, my husband and my son. As for me, I love chocolate milk after a workout - which is probably why I needed the workout in the first place:).

Well, as a yoga teacher I would have to agree with Polly on it transforming our lives.

But to answer your question, no you will not lose faster by cutting out your egg and avocado! It is actually perfect. Keeping your blood sugar level throughout the day is essential. Protein and fat help us do this as well as keeping us full so that we do not over eat at the next meal. Little healthy meals like that all day long (like 6) will do more for weight loss and satiation than anything else!

Keep working out and loving good food...sending positive energy your way this morning..have a wonderful day!

Actually Polly, chocolate milk after a workout is great! That is exactly what I do (Ovaltine) you are getting protein, sugar, vitamins/minerals and all that good stuff. I run about 5-7 miles at a time 3 days a week (15-20 miles per week) and I eat half a banana before with a small dollop of peanut butter and a glass of chocolate milk after.

I also do strength training three times a week and after that I have my normal breakfast with a small glass of milk. This works great for me and it is all healthy and nutritious.

As a general rule you should always have some form of protein after working out.
