What Bugs me About the Biggest Loser

The Biggest Loser Workout: Cardio MaxI just watched a Biggest Loser "Where Are They Now?" episode... and while I was brought to tears by a lot of the stories (which, frankly doesn't take a lot lately).  I was just bugged by all the people who said, "my life will be SO much better once I lose weight."

Newsflash, it's not really that different.

Sure, a few things are better, most of those are how you fit in clothes and how you can go shopping, possibly how you can bend down without groaning.... but my life in general isn't that different.

You can't lose weight because it's going to make you a new person.  Yes, your waist size is new.  You might get cuter in your clothes, but don't plan on YOU being different.  If YOU are wanting to be different you need to change yourself, not your weight.  However, I get that they do some therapy type stuff on the biggest loser... but regardless.  You need to be happy now AND then.

I do think it's the people who think there will be a huge transformation in their self that end-up in trouble and unahppy and gaining the weight back.

I was fine with myself before.  I just didn't want to be diabetic or take cholesterol meds.  And that is all. :)

In other news, stress is totally helping the scale.  I am now down almost FIFTY pounds since I started my weight loss journey and 40 pounds since I started weight watchers.  And THAT is a happy thing indeed. :)  I'm glad that so far, I've been able to deal with the stress without eating.  So far. :)

Congratulations on the great weight loss. For me, the thing that bugs me is the advertisements during the show. :)

You're right. They really act like being thinner is the most important thing in the world. And while they *say* that being healthy is important, they are essentially putting these people on crash diets: they are so radically changing their lives in such a short amount of time that it's so difficult for them to maintain when the pressure is off.

Congrats on doing so well yourself, I've heard Weight Watchers is such a good program because it allows you a lot of freedom within certain boundaries- so your changes don't have to be so drastic.

I think it depends on your starting weight and how active a person is to start with. Many can't enjoy life the way a thinner person can, they can't fit in seats, they can't walk and keep up with their family, they have the beginning of or full blown diseases that dramatically effect the quality of their life. Its hard to be completely happy when you see life passing you by but can't keep up/participate so for many losing weight really does make the quality of their lives so much better. That being said what I think they fail to realize is that just getting started makes such a huge difference.
