Emergency Question: Working Out Too Hard

Ok, now that we have some smarter readers reading this blog (not that any of you are dumb, but... well, you know)... I have a question for you.

How come, when I have a REALLY hard workout I don't lose weight.  Yesterday I was inspired ala the Biggest Loser and I really worked out hard.   Jenny didn't kill me, but she came close.  So I was hoping for some good results on the ol' scale today.  I also followed the points to a T.  So, what when wrong?  Should I not aim for workouts that are going to make me sore.  I mean, I used to get sore a lot when I was just starting to workout, but now it's fairly rare...

Anyway, thoughts?

Am I going to be fat forever?  Perhaps....

I have no clue, but I bet it's frustrating! Maybe you're building muscle in those workouts and not so much burning fat? I don't know!

Here are some things that might be going on:
1. after a workout, your body doesn't just drop the pounds. it still has to adjust to the water lost, muscle built and calories burned, so weighing yourself within 24 hours doesn't necessarily show the work you put in.
2. there's a good chance you are gaining muscle! which isn't a bad thing at all - you'll notice your clothes are fitting looser
3. plateaus...we hate them, but it happens. your body is going through big, positive changes, and sometimes it has to re-adjust. that just means it might take a break from losing weight. but your workouts aren't going to waste, I promise!

I echo trisha. Remember that even if you gain muscle weight you can still loose inches, and be overall more toned and slender! Studies have shown that women who are toned look lighter than their untoned counterparts.

A lot of the time when you start a new workout program or change it up your body will retain water and fluid. I started a HIIT rotation last month and was 2 1/2 weeks into it before I stopped retaining. Here's a blog post about it:

Chances are you are building muscle or you're in a plateau which is when you need to change up your routine. Running in a treadmill is going to get old and so you'll need to mix it up with another routine like kickboxing or dance aerobics. You just need to keep your body guessing. Also, you can't lose weight after one major workout just like you can't get fat from one food binge even though everyone seems to think so. It takes a process and a lifestyle change.

Also, work on gaining muscle. Believe it or not, muscle burns fat. So any extra muscle you gain will help eat that fat while you sleep and sit so I would break up your exercise into sessions. 2-3 days a week do aerobic stuff and 2-3 days a week do only muscle toning. Make sure there are days between your strength training to adequately let your muscles rest and build stronger. Don't do 4 lb weights and expect anything, start with 8 lbs and work your way to 15 lbs. That's the only way you're going to get results.
