First off, an introduction. I'm Lara, Hilary's friend, and I need to lose weight. And keep it off. So does my husband.
At the beginning of this year I lost 35 pounds. But, a cross-country move in August, and preparations for it all summer caused me to stop paying attention to the necessary things to maintain that weight. Add to that all of the stress of the move, combined with the stress of trying to learn a new area and make new friends and I've gained every bit of that 35 pounds back.
My biggest problem is sugar. I have PCOS, which means I am insulin resistant. When I go off sugar completely (and I do mean completely: no refined flour, no high fructose corn syrup and no sugar anywhere on an ingredient list), I drop weight fairly easily.
Only, it's not exactly EASY to not eat sugar. The last 2 months, beginning with Halloween are the hardest months of the year to stay away from it. So, my first line of attack is to quit cold turkey, which I have now been trying to do since the day after Christmas. My first successful day was yesterday, and boy did I ever have a doozy of a migraine.
But, one day down. It feels good. (And, 2.5 pounds lost in that same day.)
So, what is the one thing that you can do, that you know will help you be most successful? We all have different issues to deal with and diets are not a one-size-fits-all sort of thing, unfortunately. What is the thing you KNOW works for you? And what will it take for you to actually do it?

Mine is obviously moderation. I'm big on moderation in all things in my life, but because I have the SLOWEST metabolism I have to be EXTRA moderate on food.
I am hoping this blog, and Drew and now I've told my kids that if Drew and I lose 20 pounds total we can get a wii fit. I doubt they'll let me eat anything. :)
Oh, mine is moderation also. That's why tracking my calories consumed works the best for me. It's just a pain and time consuming. I use fitday.com and that helps a bit.
For Christmas I asked for and got a heart rate monitoring watch. It also has a calorie-burn monitor which has been beneficial to see exactly how many calories I'm NOT burning when I don't do some cardio each day!
I have 28# to lose and I'm DETERMINED it's going to happen in 2010! I get frustrated when it doesn't seem to happen over night. (Duh... The weight didn't come on overnight and I'm not going to lose it overnight!) To ease that frustration, I'm training for a half-marathon. Then I keep at the cardio even when the scale doesn't say I lost 3# from the day before.
Laura, like you I have PCOS and Insulin Resistance. It is SUPER hard to cut out the refined sugars in these last two 1/2 months of the year. I just purchased a treadmill so I'm hoping with the combo of that and cutting down my refined sugar/carb intake I can drop the 10 lbs I've gained in the last year since I've been married....booo
I too have PCOS and have just been diagnosed as diabetic...so for me it's all about the carbs.
I just met with a nutritionist and she said the big things are limiting carbs to 45 grams per meal, eating regularly, and eating something as soon as I wake up to jump start my metabolism.
I am going to try all that and see how it goes.
